Back on the Rue Charlot, at no. 67, Agnès Butor’s La Boutique Extraordinaire is also a back-to-nature celebration. Her garments are ravishing, wonderful to touch and all made from luxurious fabrics and/or natural or rare animal fibres, including alpaca, baby Lama, merino wool, mohair and silk from the Himalayas.

Agnès Butor’s love of natural textiles stems from when she learnt to weave in Middlebury, Vermont, when her father taught French literature there. Her extraordinary garments, which are made from gorgeous natural fibres she’s hand-picked around the globe, are luxurious, gorgeous, soft and light to the touch.

Quiet Paris - Avril 2013
Narrow, characterful rue Charlot is full of small shops where the person behind the till is most probably the designer and maker, too. Amongst this urban profusion of inventiveness is a small boutique selling the most ravishing garments for women. If you yearn for the softest tangerine-orange cashmere jumper of a finely spun, moss-green hemp scarf, this is one of the loveliest shops in Paris. It is very rare to find clothing shops that don't play music but Agnès Butor, the warm, knowledgeable owner, not only ensures a calm atmosphere, she also hosts small exhibitions of unusual garments. You might find a hand-dipped indigo upcycled antique nightdress or a warm felted jacket that moulds itself to your body after being worn few times. Aficionados come here from as far a field as the United States and Japan - not to gawp at well-known brands but to find some of the loveliest clothes in the world.

As it’s name indicates, this new store in the Upper Marais is extraordinary. Extraordinary in its selection of far from standardized articles, its unique pieces or textile works of art and especially of clothing made from the finest materials and 100% natural fibres. Cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo, wool, alpaca, cashmere ... Ecological and ethical friendliness. The clothes are made in small workshops, by craftsmen, working in decent conditions and who respect the environment. An extra: Every month, an exhibition is devoted to one designer (the felt artist François Hoffmann and her incredible jackets, the stylist Catherine Jahan and her precious organza stoles ...).
